I got the HTC Droid Eris because I'm on Verizon and really wanted a smartphone (I was starting to itch for the Internet). Even though the Eris was the unloved and unadvertised Droid, I really liked the way the phone and its interface looked way more than Motorola's Droid.
AK Notepad (free) - I love the AK Notepad app because I'm super OCD, so it lets me keep track of all the things I need to do. I can have multiple notes on there, and I can give each one a name so I know what they are. It's really helpful in keeping me organized, and it doubles as a notebook when I need to write things down but don't have a real notebook or a folder or anything with me.
Google Maps (free) - Google Maps is really helpful because I'm downtown a lot, and I'm not the most directionally savvy person, so most of the time when I'm away from the Water Tower campus, I have no idea where I am or where I'm going (yes, still, as a junior). I don't even have to know where I am to find out how to get from there to where I need to go—there's a feature that can automatically pinpoint where I am using my phone's GPS. It's also pretty cool that you can use the satellite and street view modes on the phone.
Gmail (free) - I like having Gmail on my phone because it gives me a notification every time I have a new e-mail, and it lets me check it right there without having to get to a computer. I check my e-mail all the time as it is, so this just lets me know when there's a point to checking it or whether I'd just be looking at 20 messages I've seen before. It's also really convenient that it has its own app and I don't have to open the Internet browser and type in the address to get to it—just a tap.
Browser (free) - How could I live without you, Internet Browser? You keep me entertained by letting me read TFLN and FML while I'm stuck on the CTA, and then when those run out of entertainment value, I can switch to trusty old Facebook. I don't know how I ever functioned without having the Internet with me at all times. Plus, if the CTA's Bus Tracker should ever become accurate again ...
