Dressing Up

My family takes tradition very seriously in a very unserious way: Each holiday we gather around the television and watch a movie that is wildly inappropriate for that date. Last Christmas it was Ken Burns' documentaries on the civil war; two Decembers ago it was The Godfather. This Thanksgiving my mother Netflixed HBO's rendition of Grey Gardens (but I think the themes of manipulation and generational problems might run dry soon, so I'm secretly rooting for slasher movies to make a comeback). We take a similar approach when it comes to dinner staples. Of course there's turkey or some kind of protein, then potatoes, carrots, green beans, dips, stuffing, etc.--basically the expected essentials to a traditional feast for which I give thanks. Every year my pals (and, according to my Facebook news feed, loads of pals of pals) gather together to celebrate what is known as Friendsgiving, when parents are absent but kitchen skills are in full force. Everyone is delegated a task or a dish, but somehow we always end up with more food than our fridges can handle--and then inevitably the Formica table is folded up and we dance party our way through the sleepiness that results from an excess of tryptophan. This year I was in charge of roasting a chicken. I had every intention of posting the recipe we improvised here, but something last Wednesday changed my mind: I sat in on Jonathan Safran Foer's lecture he gave on his new book, Eating Animals. The last issue of The Phoenix included a very interesting letter to the editor: Evidently, someone has beef (pun intended) with the vegetarian soups at Simpson Dining. If I remember correctly, four years ago the options were also pretty limited, which was really disappointing because I've always thought there exists nothing more satisfying than a big bowl of good soup on a cold night. You know that commercial for Campbell's that features a snowman melting into a satiated child? I never felt that way my freshman year. But what was really interesting about the letter was that it wasn't the fact that the Italian wedding soup had little to no variation that was bothersome; it was that Loyola Dining offered no soups with meat in them. All of my pals who go to state school live by the words "Pizza is pizza," meaning that once one has decided he wants pizza, he is going to eat pizza, regardless of quality. I would have to agree, because, let's face it, there are so many variations on the pie that it's difficult to pick just one favorite. Even though pizza is often the emblem of college foods, it doesn't seem like Ramblers indulge in a slice nearly as often as the Boilermakers (that's what the students at Purdue are called, after a train--and you thought a wolf/hobo hybrid was bad) do. When I polled my friends about how often they order out, they said they averaged about once a week; the few Loyolans I talked to said they rarely, if ever, pick up a pizza.
