If forced to choose, I would have to pick Halloween as my favorite holiday. The fact that there's a socially accepted day devoted to dressing up as someone (or something) else in order to get candy from strangers (in one way or another) is pretty incredible--but in my book, anything involving both gluttony and vanity is bound to be fantastic. So in honor of All Hallow's Eve, I bring you the recipe for loukoumades, or honey puffs. I used to make these at least once a month for my pals while I was studying abroad in Germany because they cost practically nothing (less than a euro back in the motherland). I first began cooking when it became clear that if I didn't want to eat meatloaf more than once a week, I'd have to start making my own dinners--so right about when I entered the third grade. Looking back, it seems crazy that a nine-year-old was entrusted to bake and fry, but I was a responsible little kid, and my parents were hungry. The only problem was that my older sister and I had wildly different tastes: she was a health nut, whereas I would sooner drink an entire bottle of vegetable oil than ever have to choke down another slice of veggie lasagna ever again. Compromising was hard, man. But she found the recipe for this pasta, and we never looked back.
