Unlucky 13th — Senior Matt McCabe doesn’t look upset.

Although they don’t always attract the most fans at Loyola, the track and field teams are doing their best to make sure that someone takes notice.

Between the men’s and women’s sides, four new school records were broken, plus two NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks were set by Ramblers at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 12 and 13.

Sophomore sprinter Devin Gosberry turned in another fantastic showing, nabbing records in both the 200m and 400m dash, surpassing the record that junior teammate Nicole Noelliste set earlier in the season in the former and setting the provisional qualifying mark in the latter.

Then she teamed up with Noelliste and sophomores Brianna Walker and Sophia Holy to set another school record in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:51.04.

Senior Genevieve Binnie and sophomore Jen Rock also led the way for the Rambler women in the 5K, with Rock turning in a time of 17:45.82, earning a fourth-place finish in the race and a spot in Loyola’s all-time top 10 best times in the event, while Binnie finished seventh with a time of 18:00.97.

For the men, senior thrower Michael Jarman, who was last week’s Horizon League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honoree, also posted an NCAA Provisional Qualifying throw of 19.81m after just missing the 19.5m required last week.
Loyola’s other top thrower, senior Erik Hernandez, posted a 15th overall finish in the shot put with a throw of 16.90m and credits his teammate for his strong final season as a Rambler.

“I think the addition of my teammate (Jarman) helped a lot.  I never had a training partner before, so having someone to compete against daily in the weight room and in practice helped get me stronger than ever and ready for the season.”

“This is a guy you can take to meets anywhere in the country and take down big schools,” Hernandez said of Jarman. “It’s too bad our students don’t know that one of the best throwers in the nation is walking around their campus.”

Three runners also finished in the top 20 in the unseeded mile run in a fantastic example of grouping, led by senior Matt McCabe at 13th, junior Anthony Wile (16th) and sophomore Josh Stein (18th).

Loyola heads to University Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a meet next weekend before the Horizon League Indoor Championships at the end of the month.
