The women’s track and field team continued their dominant season last week at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Double Dual meet, going 3-1, while the men had three individual medalists but only winning once.
The Rambler women knocked off UIC, Chicago State and Marquette. The team dominated the 800m race, with five finishing in the top 10, led by freshman Kelly Egan (second, 2:20.01), junior Caitlin Ferry (third, 2:20.41) and sophomore Jen Rock (fifth, 2:24.35).
Rock, senior Genevieve Binnie and junior Alison Rack also placed well in the mile, nabbing third, fourth and fifth, and a 4x400m relay team consisting of Egan, Ferry, sophomore Jen Bane and freshman Catherine Crisler took first.
Sophomore standouts Brianna Walker and Devin Gosberry finished second and third in the 60m dash.
When asked to explain the team’s success, Gosberry said, “The team is really coming into its own. Everyone is feeding off of each other’s energy from meets to practices.”
Gosberry has been part of a team that has shown a penchant for breaking school records. She has personally set records in both the 200m and 400m events, and was one leg of a 4x400m team (along with junior Nicole Noelliste, Walker and sophomore Sophia Holy) that set another.
“Everything is coming together for the whole team,” Gosberry said. “It’s exciting to see people setting personal records and school records every week. It just shows that we are getting stronger each time we step out on the track and onto the field.”
Leading the way for the men were star throwers and seniors Erik Hernandez and Michael Jarman. Hernandez won the shot put competition with a throw of 16.54m, while Jarman did the same in the weight throw. The winning toss of 19.31m came just short of his school record.
Sophomore Danny Docherty and senior Matt McCabe led the Ramblers in distance events, taking first and second in the mile while sophomore Josh Stein took the top spot in the 3k.
Next weekend are the Horizon League Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., then weekend after is the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., which will serve as a final tune-up for the NCAA Championships in mid-March.
