Is a date still a date if it involves three people? Not sure. Does it count if the “date” was supposed to be a double date, but one person bailed? Maybe. What was supposed to be a Friday night date turned into a double date, then into a tricycle. My two amigos and I set out downtown Friday night in search of something that would cost us a total of 10 big ones. We were worried about what fun we could find for that many bones, but we were optimistic.
Hopping off the #147 at the E. Pearson stop, we first stumbled into Borders bookstore to scan the bargain book bin. As the escalator moved us downward, we saw a plethora of books all under $20. We found a bunch of great finds: an anthology of rifles for $6.99, the latest edition of the AP Stylebook for $1.99 and a saucy romance novel featuring a man and his mermaid lover for $4.99. None of these books were particularly worth our money, and we didn’t want to spend the night reading at Borders. We decided to continue south on Michigan Avenue to see what else we could find.
Turns out Michigan Avenue isn’t that fun. The fun is at the Rock N’ Roll McDonald’s on 600 N. Clark Street. As we approached the building with thoughts of McFlurries dancing in our heads, a large black party bus rolled up the curb. The door swung open while pop music flooded the streets. Out of the van marched a slew of teenagers. Eight boys and a girl dressed in a big puffy dress jumped out. We decided we didn’t want to wait for the group to get their food before we got ours.
With our plans now foiled, we wandered across the street to the massive eight-story Sports Authority. Scouring the store, we spent ample time browsing the basement full of clearance items, but the real fun was on the eighth floor. Hidden among rows of golf clubs was a mini putting green. We all channeled our inner John Daly as we practiced our putting. We tested many of the fancy putters on display with varied success.
Exhausted from our golf game, we all decided some nutrition was in order. We made a beeline toward Ghirardelli. With all the healthy choices at our fingertips, we decided to split a delicious Mint Bliss milkshake. Although the shake took up much of our budget, we felt ready to tackle the rest of our night.
Total cost: $8
