The good, the better and the best in the world of Loyola sports

Up to women's basketball Congratulations to the ladies for making it to the Horizon League Quarterfinals after their thrilling overtime victory over the UIC Flames. Though the season was ultimately a super-colossal, super-duper disappointment, the team showed heart and determination when it needed it the most. Brava, ladies, brava. Up to men's bball With a 1-5 record in the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 8 seed, the men proved that history is just a silly seven-letter word by beating Milwaukee in the opening round. Sure they lost their next game, but gee-golly-wizz, they went down fighting. Here's a high-five for being the most bodacious team at Loyola.

Up to men's volleyball Believe it or not, winning and losing games is NOT the most important aspect of competitive sports. That honor goes to teamwork, something the men have showcased all season. No, I don't care that the team is only 12-9 this season and endured a three-game losing streak recently. What I DO care about is that they have stuck together this season, even through thick and thin.

Up to softball Despite the pressure of having to live up to pre-season expectations, the ladies have proven that perseverance conquers all with their continuous endeavor to get better. Sure, their 5-10 record might be considered an out, but their hard work and devotion is definitely a home run in my eyes.

Up to track and field No, it really doesn't matter that the program hasn't participated in any events since early March. And no, it also doesn't matter they won't participate in another one until March 29. What DOES matter is that throughout this whole month, the athletes will continue to train and improve not because they have to, but because they want to. Spread your wings and fly, my little butterflies, spread your wings and fly.

Up to golf It's a shame that golf is the most underappreciated sport at Loyola for it is undoubtedly the most beautiful to watch. With both the men and women recently resuming their spring seasons, the ability to watch a ball be driven 200 yards off a tee or a 20-foot birdie being sunk can finally become a reality. All right! And this week's Shout Out goes to me, Raf Onak. It took six issues, but I have finally rewarded all of the active sports programs with a thumbs up ... at the same time. Sure, about 100 percent of the programs above didn't deserve one, and I might have added a skoch of sarcasm into each, but at least now no athlete can complain about how they always get bad press from the Phoenix.
